Sue Ellen Rael,
egg tempera on wood panels
When I retired in 2002, I decided I would focus on determining whether my lifelong interest in the visual arts included having the talent and skill to create or is primarily a deep appreciation of others artistic expression.
After dabbling in several media, I took my first class in writing (painting) icons in the Russian tradition. It was an opportunity to explore my spirituality in a manner different from writing, which had not been successful for me. It is now a way of contemplating and deepening my spiritual life. I employ the methods and materials of the Russian tradition in icons, using egg tempera and gold leaf on wooden panels. I draw inspiration for images from both eastern and western traditions.
